Minca is a small town set into the north-western slope of the Sierra Nevada, about 600 metres above sea level. The distance from Santa Marta is short — 45 minutes by car — but the change is total: you go from the humid heat of the coast to a cool mountain climate, with afternoon mist and nights that call for a blanket.
This is coffee and cacao country. The area's coffee farms can be visited and their full process followed, from bean to roast, and many have been in the same family for generations.
But what has put Minca on the international map is the birds. The altitude, the humidity and the Sierra's isolation have produced endemic species found nowhere else on earth, and this slope is one of the easiest places to see them. Birdwatchers come from everywhere.
It is the natural complement to a beach trip: two nights in Minca completely change the rhythm and the temperature of a holiday.
What to see and do
The waterfalls
A half-hour walk from the village leads to waterfalls of cold, clear water with pools to swim in. For the more adventurous, it is possible to return down the riverbed on foot or by rafting.
The coffee farms
A visit through the full mountain-coffee process: planting, picking, pulping, drying and roasting, with a tasting at the end. This is high-grown coffee cultivated in forest shade, a few kilometres from the Caribbean Sea.
Birds and butterflies
The Sierra Nevada holds the highest number of continental endemic birds on the planet, and Minca is one of the best places to see them without an expedition. Birdwatching walks leave early in the morning, when there is activity.
The viewpoints
From the upper slope you look out over the bay of Santa Marta and, on clear days, the wetlands and the sea far into the distance. The sunsets from up here are why many people stay one more night.
How to get there
- From Santa Marta it is about 45 minutes by car, climbing the north-western slope of the Sierra.
- From La Jorará it is about 80 km, between an hour and a half and two hours.

- The main road is paved up to the village. The tracks to the farms and waterfalls are unpaved and steep: you go up by motorbike, 4x4 or on foot.
When to go
- December to March, dry season: the tracks are in better shape and there are more clear days for the viewpoints.
- For birdwatching, any time of year works, but always early in the morning.
- In the rainy season the waterfalls are at their best and everything turns green, but the unpaved tracks get difficult.
- Minca cools down at night all year round. Bring a warm layer even if you are coming from the beach.
What to know before you go
- It is cooler than people expect. Many come up in shorts from the beach and regret it by nightfall.
- The tracks to waterfalls and farms are steep and unpaved. Closed shoes, not sandals.
- Motorbike taxis are the standard local transport to the upper areas. It is normal and the most practical way to move around.
- Bring cash: there are few cash machines and not every place takes cards.
- Insect repellent. Mountain humidity brings mosquitoes, especially at dusk.
- If you are coming for the birds, get up genuinely early: activity is concentrated in the first hours of light.

Altitude and climate. Minca sits on the north-western slope at 600 metres, with cool air, coffee and mist. The northern slope — Tayrona, Don Diego, La Jorará, Palomino — is at sea level, with heat, beaches and rivers.
