Birdwatching at La Jorará

The Sierra Nevada has more endemic birds than any massif on earth. The estate is a good place to see them.

Duration
3 hours, early morning
Difficulty
Easy
Zone
La Jorará · Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
Starts at
Finca La Jorará

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta holds the highest number of continental endemic bird species in the world: it is an isolated massif that rises from sea level to 5,775 metres in barely 42 kilometres, and that gradient has produced species found nowhere else.

La Jorará sits in the low foothills of that mountain, with forest, a stream, a fruit plantation and a beach on the same property, which multiplies habitats and therefore species. The balconies of the Aluna Cabin alone give you a constant hummingbird show without leaving your room.

The outing leaves early in the morning with a local guide, following the estate's nature trails and the indigenous path towards the waterfalls.
