Seyviaka: Kogui indigenous community

A day in the Kogui village of Seyviaka, with the mamo's family, upriver from Palomino.

Duration
Full day
Difficulty
Moderate
Zone
Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta · Palomino
Starts at
Palomino, La Guajira

The Kogui are direct descendants of the Tayrona culture and have cared for the Sierra Nevada — which they call the heart of the world — for more than a thousand years. Seyviaka is one of their villages, upriver from Palomino, and this experience is a real visit to the home of mamo Agustín, not a display staged for tourists.

The walk follows the Palomino River for about two hours each way, through dense green rainforest, and along the way the guide explains the mythology of the Sierra and the community's customs. In the village you enter the indigenous houses, share lunch and have time to swim in the river.

For those who wish, aseguranzas can be made: a spiritual protection the mamo prepares specifically for you. A practical tip from the team: the word anchica breaks the ice and earns a smile from any Kogui.
