Transport and transfers
Private transfers from the Santa Marta, Riohacha, Barranquilla and Cartagena airports, plus transport for the tours.
La Jorará sits at km 62.5 on the Santa Marta – Palomino road. Getting there is straightforward, but it is worth sorting out in advance: the estate is not in a town and the final stretch off the highway is not always obvious to a driver who does not know it.
We arrange door-to-door private transfers from any of the region's four airports. You can also arrive by public bus along the Troncal del Caribe, which is the economical option and works well in daylight.
For the tours, transport works differently depending on the experience. Some include transfers — Minca includes return transport from Santa Marta; the Sierra Nevada Day Tour includes the local bus between Don Diego and La Jorará — and others do not, because most guests are already in the area.
If the group is large, we arrange a bus from Santa Marta. And if you are driving, there is parking at the estate.
What we offer
Santa Marta airport
75 km, one hour twenty minutes. It is the most common gateway and the one with the most flights from Bogotá and Medellín.
Riohacha airport
100 km, one hour forty-five minutes. Worth it if the trip includes La Guajira, since it is on the same side.
Barranquilla and Cartagena
160 km and about three hours from Barranquilla; 300 km and about five hours from Cartagena. Both are doable, but they are long drives: leave early.
Group transport
A bus from Santa Marta for large groups, corporate day passes and events. Quoted according to group size.
Practical details
- Transfers are requested when booking accommodation, giving your flight number and arrival time.
- The public bus along the Troncal del Caribe is the economical alternative. We recommend using it in daylight.
- There is parking at the estate, at no extra cost, for anyone driving.
- Private transfers for the tours are quoted separately: almost no tour includes them by default.
- For the Lost City trek, return transport from Santa Marta to El Mamey is included in the plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get there by public bus?
Yes. The buses running from Santa Marta towards Palomino and Riohacha pass along the Troncal del Caribe and drop you nearby. Let us know your approximate arrival time so we can guide you on the last stretch.
Do I need a car during my stay?
Not necessarily. The tours are arranged with local transport and the Don Diego River is six kilometres away. A car gives you freedom to visit Tayrona or Palomino on your own, but it is not essential.
