La Jorará's banana plantation is planted on a slope looking straight out at the Caribbean, and the walk is a world away from the usual tourist stops: mountain trails, sea views between the plants, fruit trees and banana and plantain varieties almost nobody knows.

A local expert explains the planting, the harvest and the picking, and it ends with a tasting of dishes made from banana and plantain. You finish with a swim in the natural pools or at the estate's beach.

The immersion includes the Las Palmas restaurant, where the banana derivatives are made — chips, traditional recipes and desserts. There you watch the transformation up close and take part in hands-on workshops to make your own products.

La Jorará is ideal ground for botanists, artists, birdwatchers, hikers, cyclists, cooks, photographers and geologists: this tour is the most direct way into that side of the estate.
