Pink flamingos from a dugout canoe and a day with a Wayuu family at their ranchería.
The Los Flamencos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, in Camarones, is where Colombia's pink flamingos concentrate. In season you can see gatherings of eight hundred to four thousand birds on the shining lagoons, reached by cayuco, the traditional Wayuu wooden boat.
Besides the flamingos there are turtles, deer and exotic birds. The second half of the day is at a Wayuu ranchería, with real cultural exchange: the Yonna dance, a taste of traditional food, the mantas and face painting, a crafts display and an explanation of a way of life woven around fishing and herding in a desert that meets the sea.
