Sustainable Travel in Colombia
Colombia is a really big country, it´s the fourth biggest in South America. But in comparison to some countries in Europe the population is quite small. Because of that some areas are still very rural and hardly ever a soul reaches these places.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is part of that stunning landscape. The Andean Mountain is the longest mountain chain in the world and different climate zones are part of it. Unique Colombia and La Jorará are located on the bottom of this mountain range, which is only 40 km away from the ocean. For us, as the team of La Jorará, it is really important to contain the nature´s beauty. We want that further generations will still be able to enjoy living in this gorgeous place. Together with you, as our guest, we want to protect the environment and work in a sustainable way.
If you decide to book with Unique Colombia and stay with us at La Jorará please follow some simple rules to make your travels as sustainable as possible:
- If you´re staying with us the first step is already made. Choosing the accommodation here is really important. We don´t have many regulations in Colombia, for example we don´t have a public garbage system. Because of that we established our own garbage system by separating different kinds of rubbish.
- If you do trips in the region we recommend taking public buses. Of course they are not as comfortable or fast as private transport but also keep in mind that it won´t hit your budget as much and you will have a cultural experience for sure.
- Any destination you visit please make sure you bring a bag to firstly bring back your own rubbish and secondly also collect some rubbish which is lying around everywhere. If you do both you are awesome.
- What about trying products you haven´t tried before? We recommend to buy Colombian products. You will get the chance to try something new and at the same time you support the local economy with your spending.
- If you are staying in the Sierra Nevada you will think: “Oh my god there is so much water here, everything is so green”, but remember when you drive 80 km north the desert starts and children have to drink dirty water. So always keep in mind: “Save water, because every drop counts!”
